The ancient Indian trails
eventually developed into roads and stagecoach lines
carrying passengers and mail. Ferries, pushed by
hand and eventually by steam, criss-crossed the Illinois
River. |

The first steamboat,
"Liberty," arrived in Peoria, ushering in the riverway
transport system. |

1844 |
One hundred fifty (150)
steamboat companies operated on Peoria Lake. |

1848
|
The first bridge across the
Illinois River built. |

1854 |
The Peoria & Bureau Valley
Railroad brought the first passenger train into Peoria.
At the height of rail activity, over 100 trains arrived
daily at Union Station. |

1907 |
The Illinois Traction
System, an interurban electric railroad, provided travel
for nearly 50 years between Peoria and other cities such
as Springfield and St. Louis. |

1921 |
Mt. Hawley Airport started
operating. |
|
1942 |
Greater Peoria Airport
built. |
