Scope & Content:
Civil War letter written by Benjamin F. Erford, who served in the Union Army.

He writes to his wife from the US Hospital in Chicago, describing how he feels lonesome amidst hundreds of soldiers who are chatting together about the War and what they've done and seen. He thinks he will be able to leave for home by the middle of next week, but may have to wait longer in the city for his pension papers.
To John, he says he sent two newspapers today and will send one tomorrow. Tells him to not be alarmed about him coming home because it is not in his power to inform when it will happen. He doesn't know what length of time that it will take to settle up with the US and when his time will come at the Pay Master General's office. Also wants to buy them presents of some kind of clothes before he leaves Chicago, including the girls and Mother. Says if Mother is not pleased if he brings her a dress, He will have to put up with it (?) But he will bring one for her that is if he can buy one that is cheap. He thinks that all things ought to be cheaper here in Chicago than in a small town.
