The next PHS Book Club selection will bring us back into the 20th century and perhaps the single most significant historical event of our times, the assassination of President Kennedy. Of course, with the 50th anniversary of this event last November, many new books appeared in bookstores. Our selection is "A Cruel and Shocking Act" by author Philip Shenon, published in 2013 by Henry Holt and Co. This book takes a somewhat different slant on the assassination as the author provides a detailed history of the Warren Commission that was charged by President Johnson to provide an official government investigation of the assignation. The author explains that many of the principle participants on the staff of the Warren Commission are still alive and were willing to provide firsthand accounts of their activities during the Commission’s investigation.
You'll learn many interesting details about the assassination itself, how the Commission operated and how their report was finally produced. Many of these details may be surprising, some will be distressing and some will be absolutely frustrated by how their government operated, even 50 years ago.
You'll learn what J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI tried to withhold from the Commission and why; how the CIA tried to withhold information from the Commission lawyers and how it stalled certain aspects of the investigation. The author does not present any conspiracy theories about the assassination; he attempts to simply present the facts of how the Warren Commission came to their conclusions with the information they had gathered. I think you'll find it a very engaging book.
