Exhibit Penicillin - The Legend of Moldy Mary

In addition to the world-wide search, a technician at the NRRL Ag Lab, Mary Robeson collected moldy fruit from fruit stands in the Peoria area for more sources of Penicillium molds. As luck would have it, a strain from a cantaloupe found in a Peoria market was to become the superior penicillin producer. The legend of “Moldy Mary” was born. The cantaloupe strain initially produced 25 times more penicillin than the Fleming strain, and most importantly it produced penicillin when grown in submerged cultures.
